In order to better understand and address environmental challenges, environmental scientists and engineers provide technical solutions and advance innovations in environmental measurements, modeling, and control through the application of scientific and engineering principles.
What is Environmental Sciences Progamme is all about ?
Dual degree in Environmental Science and Engineering is a programme with a goal of understanding, predicting and responding to human-induced environmental change. There is a need to address environmental issues such as global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, or local and regional air and water pollution requires perspectives from a diverse set of scientific disciplines including atmospheric physics and chemistry, oceanography, glaciology, hydrology, geophysics, ecology, and biogeochemistry.
Environmentalists view the Earth system as a complex set of chemical, physical and biological interactions, made even more complicated by the various activities of human society. Through exploration of the underlying processes and feedbacks within the Earth system, and with a range of approaches from theory and modeling to experiments and observations.
This dual degree programme in Environmental Technology and Management has become essential because every industry and municipal body is expected to have Health, Safety and Environment Section and dedicated personnel. The graduating students will have excellent job opportunities in regulatory agencies, banks and commercial establishments as well as developmental agencies and consultancy firms. Other direct and indirect benefits would also emerge out of this programme, like it would necessitate and provide a formal structure for interdisciplinary collaborative work in the form of common courses and project work including sharing of laboratory facilities across the Institute.

What kind of courses do you have to do?
In the first year of the programme, the courses would be common for all new entrants of IIT Bombay apart from one department introductory course (DIC). The DIC for ESE Dual Degree students would be on Water Quality Management.Undergraduate students will be trained to think about environmental processes in an integrated fashion, preparing them to manage the environmental challenges we face.
The curriculum includes basic science courses and incorporates elective courses from science, engineering and humanities disciplines. The key courses to be covered in five years will include solid mechanics, mass transfer, fluid mechanics, water resource management, microbiology, wastewater engineering, air pollution control, numerical methods for environmental engineers. Along with this the students would also be made aware about environmental law and policy. All students are supposed to also submit a Master’s thesis in their final year as a part of their dual degree project.
The students will also be eligible to pursue a Minor degree that would enable their pursuit of interests in other departments.Students in the new Environmental Sciences and Engineering programme would be allowed branch change at the end of first year, according to institute rules.
